Who's missing? Big Pharma, that's who.

To the left, the ACS Career Fair (August 28-31!) invitation I received this morning.

I see Clorox, DuPont, Gilead, Infineum, Smithers, Vertex, PPG, BASF and USPTO.

I don't see the traditional pharma companies (are Gilead or Vertex Big Pharma? Sort of, I suppose.)

Assertion: the next generation of chemists will be much less pharma-centric than previous generations...

  1. Passed a time when, not even 10 years ago, on-campus recruiters came from Pfizer, BMS, and Lilly. Last year, a friend told me the program hosted the following: P&G, Eastman, DuPont, and Dow. Hmmm...

  2. I'm just glad I didn't get that job with Bristol-Myers Squibb when I interviewed on campus.

  3. I got the same thing. I registered for the "virtual career fair" and with much excitement clicked "search":

  4. IMO the likes of Gilead and Vertex are far more attractive potential employers than Big Pharma now anyway. Who in their right mind would want to up sticks and work for Pfizer with everything that has happened (and is still happening)?!

Unstable Isotope's one liner says it all

  5. Yes, because those two companies aren't potential take-over targets for big pharma...

No job in pharma/biotech is safe, save that of the CEO....

    Fixed it for ya.

I work for one of the companies CJ mentioned. I also used to work for Pfizer.

With a comparitive perspective I now have, I think Pfizer is a good employer. If they ever post jobs in my field and geography again, I will apply.

  9. YP 11:56, I agree 100% with both points. I would just rather work at a smaller organization (having suffered the crippling bureaucracy and useless management at GSK for many years). The size of Vertex and Gilead seem sensible to me - big enough to pack a punch, but not 'bloated'. I hope they can fight off the wolves...

Apologies Anon 3:20, I should not have made such a sweeping statement. Each to his/her own.
